About

I grew up playing RPGs and video games, loving the sense of fantasy they invoke. In my adult life I’m still interested in this form of play, but more for the social aspects of getting together with your friends and the collaborative play it can involve. MMOs provide a venue for this sort of thing. In ways I’m still struggling to articulate, I have a feeling that this sort of play will become more important in the future, so even when I don’t always have time to play (or write about playing), I still feel the desire to stay involved. Plus, gnomes crack my shit up.

I originally got into MMOs through Final Fantasy Online, where I got as amazingly far as level 26 at any one point, har har (that’s 26 out of 50, or 75 in the first expansion, to give you an idea). It just got to be too much work in terms of off-game research and commitment, with too much chance for loss just in making mistakes. That’s fine for some folks but over time, more and more it didn’t suit me at all. (Fun fact: My original attempt at blogging about MMOs, which never got off the ground, was going to be called Postcards from Vana’diel… hence the name of this here weblog.) Now I play WoW on and off and am having more fun with it. In terms of Bartle’s types, I consider myself an Explorer first, and then a Socializer, with a bit of Achiever thrown in, but usually in terms of progressing through storylines.

Sometimes I write here in character when I think it’ll be funny. Usually I’m writing as myself. My name’s Jason and you can find more of what I’m up to at 7au.net.
